This is the kind of film I can’t honestly say I enjoyed; indeed, it’s more a chore to be endured than anything. But once you get past the opening thirty minutes – we debated pretending we never received the DVD – it’s probably one you will remember. Ana (Davidova) lives her life in a drug-induced stupor, co-habiting with her brother (Miller) in an incestuous relationship. Her pharmaceutical phog is rudely interrupted by former boyfriend Victor (Albalá); he’s now terminally-ill and kidnaps her in order to… Well, that’s really the question, and it’s one director-writer Rabal seems unwilling to answer explicitly. You’re left to make of proceedings what you will, which always seems to me a bit of a cheat: while I enjoy challenging films, they need to have a philosophy rather than shrugging and saying, “Well, what do you think?”

Much credit to Davidova, for what can only have been a gruelling shoot – I believe she is Rabal’s wife, though not sure if that makes things better or worse. She’s chained up, stripped, blindfolded, and generally abused for most of the final hour, in

The reading in September with co-host and artist Adele Dipasquale will be devoted to the politics of the voice. Together we will read excerpt from For More than One Voice: Toward a Philosophy of Vocal Expression by the Italian philosopher Adriana Cavarero. Here, the author claims that the voice is challenging the meaning, or in other words, the voice embodies the speaker, and therefore ‘who’ has a pre-symbolic origin to ‘what’ is being said. The voice is described as a relation and condition to the communication which defines the uniqueness of the speaker, rendering the voice preceding the meaning.

As a research-based artist, practice of Adele Dipasquale deals with the politics of language and the relationship between magic and words. Their research starts from a deep inquiry into the power of naming: how words produce worlds and allow for certain things to exist and not for others. Dipasquale investigates how linguistic constructs shape reality, how they operate, and how they are often tools of oppression, but also emancipation and self determination. In this research on language the voice has a pivotal role: it is the embodiment of language, but it also escapes the historical connotation of written text.
