Britains Justin Wilson was fatally injured in an accident during the Indycar Series race ABC Supply 500 at Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania, United States, on Sunday, 23 August 2015. On lap 179 of 200, race leader Sage Karams car went out of control, spun and crashed, sending debris airborne. James Jakes who closely followed Karam, slowed down in front of Wilson, who went to the outside to avoid colliding with him. As he drove through the accident scene, Justin Wilsons helmet was struck by the nose cone from Karam's crashed car. Wilson suffered a traumatic brain injury and his car veered left into the inside wall. He was extricated from his car by the emergency crews and immediately airlifted to the Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, where he was reported to be in a coma. Sadly, he died the following day.
This was the first fatality in IndyCar racing since 2011, when Justin Wilsons compatriot and friend Dan Wheldon was killed in a crash during the Las Vegas 300 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
