Sarah Hyland has shared openly of the physical and mental health struggles she experienced following two kidney transplants. She's previously confirmed the toll that the period of time had taken on her body, and in a new interview, she detailed how some of her time on the Modern Family set was also impacted.
Diagnosed with kidney dysplasia, Sarah underwent her first kidney transplant surgery in 2012. As she told Self, her body later rejected the kidney and she was forced to undergo a second transplant surgery in 2017.
Recently appearing on the Quitters podcast with former Modern Family costar Julie Bowen, Sarah confirmed she experienced serve exhaustion ahead of the first transplant. “There are some episodes of Modern Family where I do not remember filming because I was asleep,” she said.
She specifically pointed to a season three episode titled “Hit and Run,” saying, "That entire episode I was asleep for. I don't remember filming it at all. It was right before my first transplant." She explained that she was only awake when filming was required.

For Hyland, two things are key to being a good couple: “You have to have good sex, and you have to be able to fight well,” she says. “It’s funny because I've always been the one that communicates the most in a relationship.
