Angelina Jolie‘s directorial debut, a film about the 1990s Bosnian war that stoked controversy during its production, will be released in theaters at the end of the year.
Representatives for the distributor FilmDistrict, a subsidiary of GK Films, said that it would release the film, “In the Land of Blood and Honey,” in the United States on Dec. 23. FilmDistrict said the movie, which Ms. Jolie also wrote, stars Zana Marjanovic, Goran Kostic and Rade Serbedzija and features “a completely local cast, most of whom were children of the war.”
A release described “In the Land of Blood and Honey” as a film that “illustrates the consequences of the lack of political will to intervene in a society stricken with conflict.”
While the film was being made last year it was criticized by Bakira Hasecic, the president of Bosnia’s Women Victims of War association, who said that it depicted a Bosnian woman “falling in love with her torturer,” a Serbian man. A permit for the movie to shoot in the Bosnia capital, Sarajevo, was briefly denied but later approved by officials.
